Amar Singh Chamkila ... The Story of Elvis Of Punjab ...
Imtiaz Ali's Chamkila stands out from the rest of his movies, as it showcases a unique blend of emotions unlike many other films. Although one may find some similarities between Amar Singh Chamkila and Rockstar, Ali's latest film does not delve deeply into the internal journey of the characters, unlike Rockstar.
Emerging from rural Punjab in the 1980s, Chamkila’s songs are not just his expression but also his means of survival. Hence, it is his primary obligation to provide people what they like. When people start enjoying double entendre and somewhat obscene songs, Chamkila starts inclining towards creating similar music. As he climbs the ladder of fame, he also incorporates side effects of Name and Fame into his journey.
Initially, because of facing threats from people due to the obscene songs on one side and, on the other side, the rising demand for his tapes and CDs, he becomes apprehensive. At one point, Chamkila shades down the fear of death out of his mind, and immediately after that, he is brutally killed.
Who killed him, remains a mystery even today, but various versions about him are portrayed in the movie. After the murder of him and his wife, the audience still see their lives through the eyes of those associated with them.
When Punjab was burning in 1984 riots, Chamkila contemplates halting his shows, but he is told that in such stressful times, people need entertainment, so he is compelled to continue singing.
His songs, which refers to the sexuality of men and women openly, reflect a different aspect of him, leaving behind an indistinct line between the artist and the person. In one instance, when chamkila's wife's sister says, "Do all men only think this way?" the matriarch of the family says, "All men think this way, but they don't speak it. He (Chamkila) speaks it out..."
Through many such incidents, Imtiaz Ali has very subtly commented on societal obscenities, relationships between men and women, art, and societal norms.
Although the film's subject matter is bold, Imtiaz Ali has kept his portrayal extremely restrained. In terms of acting, the film mainly focuses on Diljit Dosanjh, who has delivered an outstanding performance. He has been complemented well by Parineeti Chopra. Other actors also shine in their roles.
The magic of the trio Irshad Kamil - A R Rahman - Imtiaz Ali is experienced once again in this film.
Amar Singh Chamkila perfectly tells you, why Chamkila is still referred as the Elvis of Punjab.
This film is a must-watch at least once.
